Safe Horizons
partnering with the community
STEPS
Safe Horizons recently added an innovative and exciting program to our existing service repertoire. The service provides affordable, safe and stable supportive housing for survivors of domestic violence and their children once they leave shelter. To finance this project, Safe Horizons was awarded $450,000 from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority as well as $112,000 from an anonymous donor. This project is part of our ongoing effort to create a sense of community in and around housing that fosters safety and non-violence, individual growth and development, self-determination, self-reliance and residential satisfaction.
To aid in the implementation of this program, Safe Horizons made the decision to create a subsidiary non-profit housing corporation, STEPS Affordable Housing. STEPS Affordable Housing is in the process of purchasing four single family homes to be rented to low income survivors of domestic violence with children who are leaving shelter. Participants in the program have access to supportive services that promote their physical, emotional and psychological well-being.
